Japan Guide : The Shinmonzen in Kyoto (京都府)

Categorised in: | Link of this article

“Shinmonzen”(新門前) is a neighborhood located in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, particularly near the Gion district and Yasaka Shrine. This area is historically and culturally significant, retaining much of Kyoto’s traditional townscape and culture.

These days, Shinmonzen is a popular tourist destination, with many high-end ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurants), inns, beautiful gardens, and shrines in the surrounding area. It is known as a place where visitors can experience the charm of Kyoto and enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere of old Japan.

In this area, a boutique hotel designed by Tadao Ando, one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary architects, has been completed. The name of the hotel is “The Shinmonzen”.

The project has been a labour of love for over 10 years and has been designed by Mr. Ando and other artist friends for the modern travellers.

Mr.Ando explains that the design of this hotel aimed to “meet the needs of the modern traveler while respecting Kyoto’s traditions and heritage.” In other words, the goal was to merge the past, present, and future, maintaining Kyoto’s distinct character while incorporating a contemporary sensibility.

Additionally, Mr.Ando believes that this hotel will “embody the essence of Kyoto while also appealing to international sensibilities.” By balancing traditional elements with modern ones, the intention is to harmonize local culture with global values.

Furthermore, from the guest rooms, visitors can enjoy views of the Shirakawa River, considered the most beautiful waterway in Kyoto. Mr.Ando hopes that everyone who visits will discover “a new charm in the ancient city.”

From his statement, it is clear how much he values Kyoto’s atmosphere and how he has carefully integrated modern elements into the space. His intention is to provide visitors with a fresh perspective by harmonizing tradition with innovation.

The café and restaurant on the first floor is open to non-guests as well, so we made a reservation and went there with our family.

My daughter chose the pancakes.

My son chose the American breakfast.

My husband and I chose the Japanese breakfast.

We were able to enjoy a relaxing breakfast to the sound of the river flowing right next to us. Afternoon tea seems to be quite popular as well, so it might be a nice addition to your Kyoto sightseeing memories. Just be sure to make a reservation in advance!
