Sara Udon(皿うどん), which literally means “plate noodles,” is a regional dish from Nagasaki, a city in southwestern Japan known for its unique blend of Japanese, Chinese, and Western influences. The dish reflects Nagasaki’s rich cultural history as one of the few ports open to foreign trade during Japan’s period of national isolation (Edo period). Chinese immigrants and traders played a significant role in shaping the local cuisine, and Sara Udon is a direct result of that cultural fusion.

Sekihan onigiri is a traditional Japanese rice ball made from sekihan, which is glutinous rice steamed with red adzuki beans. The beans give the rice a slightly reddish or pinkish hue, which symbolizes good fortune and celebration in Japanese culture.

Sekihan is often served during special occasions such as birthdays, festivals, and ceremonies. When made into an onigiri (rice ball), it becomes a convenient and portable way to enjoy this festive dish. Sekihan onigiri is sometimes wrapped in a piece of nori (seaweed) or sprinkled with sesame seeds and salt for added flavor.

Believe it or not, my cooking class was featured on TV for the third time! 😳‼️
This time, it was on an informational program that airs during the daytime. The show also introduced a few charming retro shopping streets with good access from my cooking studio, and I truly enjoyed watching the segment myself.

BIG thank you to all the participants who kindly agreed to be interviewed, as well as to the filming crew and the program staff!
