Recipe : How to prepare Matcha
Matcha is a type of powdered green tea, and it is especially used in Japanese tea ceremonies. Matcha is made by steaming tea leaves, drying them, and then carefully grinding them into a fine powder using a stone mill. Unlike regular green tea, matcha involves drinking the tea leaves themselves.
Matcha is loved not only for its use in tea ceremonies but also as an everyday beverage. In recent years, it has become widely used in sweets, drinks, and cooking. In this article, we will introduce the basic way to make matcha.
Necessary Tools :
1. Matcha (powdered green tea)
2. Chawan (tea bowl)
3. Chasen (bamboo whisk)
4. Chashaku (bamboo scoop)
5. Yuzamashi (cooling vessel for hot water)
6. Thermometer (optional)
7. Water (optional)
Steps :
0. (Preparation) Warm the tea bowl by pouring hot water into it and letting it sit for a while. Then, discard the water and wipe the bowl dry. Recommend to wet the chasen with hot water.
1. Use the chashaku to scoop the matcha into the tea bowl. Typically, use two scoops of the chashaku (about 2g) for one serving.
2. Add a small amount of water and mix the matcha into a paste.
3. Boil water and use the yuzamashi to cool it to 70–80 ℃. Pour about 60–80ml of hot water into the tea bowl.
4. Hold the chasen and whisk the matcha quickly. Whisk for about 15–20 seconds until fine foam forms.
5. Once the foam is even, the matcha is ready. Hold the tea bowl with both hands and enjoy sipping it.
