Recipe : Yaki Onigiri (Japanese Grilled Rice Balls)
Yaki Onigiri(焼きおにぎり)is not so famous among worldwide but this is one of hidden popular onigiri in Japan. In this recipe, I will show you how to make two types of grilled rice balls. One is to place a white rice ball on the net grill and grill it while dipping it in soy sauce (the traditional style), and the other is to pre-season it with soy sauce, dried bonito flakes, mirin, etc. and place it on the net grill or pan and grill it to your desired hardness (the modern style).
Ingredients (2 rice balls):
Traditional style:
300G (100G x 3) Japanese rice *steamed
2 Tbsp Soy sauce
2 Tbsp Canola oil
2 tsp Mirin
Modern style:
300G (100G x 3) Japanese rice *steamed
1 Tbsp Soy sauce
1/2 Tbsp Mirin
2 Tbsp Canola oil
Directions:
Traditional style:
1. Prepare cooked rice and water in separate bowls.
2. Wet your palms and put a certain amount of rice on the palm.
3. With using both hands, roll and form the onigiri to make triangle shape.
4. Pour canola oil in a pan and put onigiri.
5. Grill them until all surfaces get brown color.
6. Mix the seasonings in a bowl and apply the sauce little by little with a brush.
Modern style:
1. Prepare the steamed Japanese rice.
2. Add soy sauce and mirin, white sesame seeds in a pot. Mix well.
3. Wet your palms and put a certain amount of rice on the palm.
4. With using both hands, roll and form the onigiri to make triangle shape.
5. Pour canola oil in a pan and put onigiri.
6. Grill them until all surfaces get brown color.
