Tokyo Guide : Yanaka Ginza (谷中銀座)

Categorised in: | Link of this article

Yanaka Ginza is a traditional shopping street located in the Taito ward of Tokyo. The Yanaka area itself is known for its old-fashioned, nostalgic atmosphere and has become a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Yanaka Ginza is at the heart of this area and offers a glimpse into the charm of Tokyo’s Showa-era streets.

The shopping street is lined with small, family-run stores, including local food shops, miscellaneous goods stores, and cafes. There are also many food stalls where visitors can enjoy local snacks like deep-fried sweet buns, grilled skewers, and shaved ice, giving a taste of traditional Japanese street food.

One of the main attractions of Yanaka Ginza is its nostalgic vibe, offering a sense of old Japan. As you stroll down the street, you’ll be transported back in time, almost as if you’re walking through a scene from a Showa-era movie or drama. The street has a unique, timeless quality that reflects the community’s care for preserving its heritage.

Nearby, you can also visit places like the Yanaka Cemetery and Tokyo University of the Arts, making the area perfect for a combined sightseeing trip. In the evening, the street is sometimes lit up, offering a different, charming atmosphere compared to the daytime.

What you can find in Yanaka Ginza :

(Even kimono for cats! 👘)

My favorite Japanese baskets and household goods shop.

Yanaka is famous for cat lovers!

Let’s find a Kimono for cats!

Are you interested in wearing a vintage Kimono?

How about tasting various Japanese sake just outside of sake shop?

There are still a few traditional greengrocers remaining in Yanaka Ginza.

We recommend the cat tail shape donuts!
