Japan Guide : Sunday Market in Kochi (高知県)
Held every Sunday in Kochi Prefecture, this market called “Nichiyo-ichi” has a history of more than 300 years.
From around 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., about 300 stores line up along Otesuji Street under the castle in Kochi, stretching about 1.3 km along its length.
The market features hundreds of stalls selling local products, including fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, and seafood, along with handicrafts, traditional sweets, and various goods from the region.
The stalls are truly unique, including an elderly woman who has been selling her specialty of home cooking and Japanese sweets for many years, a private store selling local foods such as hat bread, a farmer selling citrus fruits unique to Kochi such as yuzu and yasaku, and a young couple who have just moved to the area selling whole grain bread mixed with rare ingredients such as olives and dried tomatoes.
It was really fun and valuable to shop while talking with each person.
Kochi is a rare city in Japan with a streetcar system running through the center of the city, and is a secluded place rarely visited by tourists from abroad, so please experience it if you have the chance.
The market is especially famous for its fresh produce from the surrounding mountains and coastline. Visitors can enjoy seasonal offerings and the warm, community-based atmosphere, where many vendors have been operating for generations. The Tosa Sunday Market not only serves as a place for shopping but also as a social gathering spot where locals and visitors alike can experience authentic regional culture.
