Tokyo Food & Neighborhood Walking Tour

Beyond the Cooking Studio: A New Tokyo Food and Neighborhood Walking Tour

At YUCa’s Japanese Cooking, I welcome guests from around the world and introduce them to Japanese home cooking.

After class, I sometimes take interested guests to a local supermarket.

As we browse ingredients such as kombu, bonito flakes, miso, soy sauce, seasonings, and Japanese snacks, I answer questions such as:

“What is this used for?”
“How do Japanese people choose this ingredient?”
“What would you recommend as a souvenir?”

For those of us who live in Japan, a supermarket is part of everyday life. But for visitors from overseas, it can be a fascinating place filled with discoveries about Japanese food culture.

A Message from a Guest

Recently, I received a message from a guest asking:

“Do you offer supermarket or neighborhood walking tours?”

The message arrived at the perfect time, as I had already been considering offering a new experience outside the cooking studio—one that would introduce guests to Japanese food culture and everyday life through local neighborhoods.

After asking about the guest’s interests, preferred duration, and budget, I decided to create my first private food and neighborhood walking tour.

More Than a Typical Sightseeing Tour

This new experience will take guests through local shopping streets, supermarkets, and neighborhoods while introducing the food and daily life of Tokyo.

For the first tour, we are planning to explore Yanaka, an area that still retains the atmosphere of old Tokyo.

We will walk through the neighborhood, visit its local shopping street, and enjoy a selection of Japanese snacks, sweets, and local foods. At a supermarket, I will also introduce essential Japanese ingredients and seasonings, including how they are selected and used at home.

This is not a tour designed simply to visit as many famous attractions as possible.

Instead, it is an opportunity to walk through a neighborhood, discover its shops and flavors, and experience the food culture found in everyday Japanese life.

Understanding Food Means Understanding Daily Life

Food culture does not exist only inside the kitchen.

Where do people buy their ingredients?
What do they eat in each season?
What kinds of shops are found in a local shopping street?
How do families prepare meals and gather around the table?

Walking through a neighborhood reveals parts of Japanese food culture that cannot always be fully explained during a cooking class.

Since beginning my cooking classes in 2013, I have come to believe that I want to share not only how Japanese dishes are prepared, but also the values, traditions, and ways of thinking behind them.

Through this new tour, I hope guests can experience The Japanese Kitchen Way in the real streets, shops, and flavors of Tokyo.

A Personalized Private Experience

Each tour will be planned according to the guest’s interests and preferences.

For example, you may wish to:

  • Learn about Japanese ingredients in a supermarket
  • Explore a traditional local shopping street
  • Taste foods enjoyed by local residents
  • Discover everyday Tokyo beyond the major tourist areas
  • Find Japanese seasonings, snacks, or food-related souvenirs
  • Learn how Japanese ingredients are used in home cooking

I will begin by offering these experiences as private tours for individuals and small groups. As I receive feedback from my guests, I hope to continue developing and improving the tours.

From the cooking studio to the streets of Tokyo, I would like to offer new ways to experience Japanese food—by cooking it, learning about its ingredients, walking through local neighborhoods, and tasting the flavors of the community.

I am very excited to begin this new journey.
