Tokyo Guide : HIYAKASHI IPPODO TEA
IPPODO TEA, a long-established Kyoto tea house, is hosting a limited-time café called “Hiyakashii IPPODO TEA” in Omotesando, running until September 30th.
At the entrance, there’s a noren (traditional Japanese curtain) with a green ghost-like character on it. Instead of being scary, it has a kind of amusing and intriguing vibe.
As you part the noren and step inside, you’re greeted by a space inspired by Kyoto’s bamboo paths. It feels like you might encounter a ghost!
The café also offers an English menu, so international visitors can enjoy it too.
We ordered the following:
- Dorotabou Matcha (どろた坊 抹茶)
- Kori Matcha (氷 抹茶)
- Chai (チャイ)
Dorotabou Matcha: The cute appearance (with the ghost face) is very charming. It felt like a Japanese version of affogato, with the fun of crumbling the meringue and enjoying it with the ice cream. The kids were delighted with this style. Most importantly, the generous use of Ippodo’s matcha provided a luxurious experience!
Matcha Ice: The combination of matcha, lemon-flavored syrup, and aiyu jelly was refreshing and new. (Since we had children with us, a bit more syrup might make it easier for them to enjoy.)
Chai: This chai had a great blend of spices along with unique Japanese seasonings mixed in by Ippodo, making it just the way I like it.
The cute containers for the shaved ice can and chai be washed and taken home!
